The Winter Chamber Festival: Something Old, Something New

The 2013-2014 Vashon Chamber Music Series, which debuts on October 18, welcomes back some familiar faces, some performers we haven’t seen for a while, and, as always, some exciting new faces.

In October, we’ll welcome back pianist Jeanine Jacobson (from 2010’s Quartet for the End of Time) as she performs, with Rowena Hammill, cello sonatas by Beethoven and Prokofiev, and then joins Karin Choo (violin) and Douglas Davis (cello) for Brahms’ masterful Trio in C major. For November’s concert, we welcome Jane Harty (piano) as she plays, with Ron Patterson (violin) and Davis, Rachmaninoff’s brooding Trio in G Minor. The program will also feature Roxanna Patterson on viola and Karin Choo, as the four string players unite to present the delightful Borodin string quartet.

In January, we introduce Seattle Symphony stars Laura de Luca (clarinet) and Mikhail Shmidt (violin). They, Hammill, Davis, and regular guests Heather Bentley (viola) and Natasha Bazhanov (violin), will perform a stellar program that includes the clarinet quintet by Weber and the exciting 9th string quartet of Shostakovich.

Series regulars, Trio Pardalote, will present the February program, with special guest composer, Wayne Horvitz. They will play a piece especially written for them by Horvitz that features his signature electronics. The program will also include Beethoven’s captivating Trio in Eb, op. 3.

Audience favorites from last year, the Finisterra Trio, will return in March for another evening of thrilling repertoire, and then the season will close in May with an all string concert. The talents of Artur Girsky (violin), Natasha Bazhanov (violin) and Julie Whitton (viola) will be spotlighted, as they join Hammill and Davis for the glorious Brahms G Major sextet.
